Formula SAE Competition
The University of Adelaide Racing Concepts is an engineering project undertaken by Mechanical and Automotive Engineers at the University of Adelaide.
Each year a new car is designed from the ground up with each car being an improvement on the previous one. The car is taken to the Australasian competition at the end of the year, to compete against other teams from Australia and around the world.
Formula SAE is a worldwide competition, with events held in the United States (2), UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Italy. Teams of final year Mechanical Engineering students must design and build their own Formula style racecar. In December 2007, the teams will enter their vehicles in a series of design oriented and performance rewarded events.
Engineering innovation and creativity is encouraged by leniency in the regulations, whilst safety remains of paramount importance. Engine capacity is limited to 610cc, with a restricted intake. Complete CAD modelling and extensive Finite Element Analysis is undertaken by the team during design. Advanced manufacturing processes are used to ensure the final product meets design specifications, and the racecar is ready to win. Each team must raise money to finance the construction and operation of the vehicle. A professional approach must be taken throughout every phase of the competition to ensure that the team operates as a successful business operation, rather than just an engineering team.
